The Holiday Season is Starting!

So, I bet you've been watching the tree in front of city hall go up and the little park next door come together, right? I have to admit that I've enjoyed watching, on my morning commute, each day's progress.

And next week we'll all get to enjoy the park, the tree, the lights, the festivities. The holiday kickoff will take place next Friday, December 7, starting at 5 p.m. (note to city officials: people work, you know. Who, besides stay-at-home moms - which I am not, can make it to an event by 5 p.m.??) (Also, how about a menorah next to that big ol' tree? Some Kwanzaa candles? I thought everyone was PC nowadays...)

From the email I got:

Across from City Hall, Merrick Park is transformed into a winter wonderland offering lots of activities for the family from 5-10 p.m. including carnival games, trackless train, face painting, candy land and more. Stage performances also begin at 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. including performances from Actors’ Playhouse. At 7 p.m., members of the City Commission will welcome the arrival of Santa Claus and will turn on the light switch for the gigantic holiday tree outside City Hall. This evening, children can take pictures with the old bearded fellow dressed in red from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. After this day, Merrick Park will be open from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. every day until December 23. Come take pictures with Santa on Thursdays and Fridays from 5-10 p.m. or Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 10 p.m. For additional information, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 305-460-5600.

That's it in a nutshell. I definitely want to go, as I know my son will enjoy this and it's always a pleasant time, but there's no way I'll be there anywhere near 5. Luckily, it looks like things don't really get started till 7, which is way more manageable.

If you go, have a good time!

December 7 is the day the Coral Gables Christmas season begins? So much for a date that was supposed to live in infamy.

Nobody is there at 5. We usually go around 6, and have never had any trouble parking.

Actors' Playhouse will be providing some of the entertainment: the cast of Madeline's Christmas will do a couple of numbers, as will the Musical Miracles.

Information on the event and the two groups of performers can be found on the South Florida Theatre Scene blog.
