Bangkok Bangkok
O.k. folks, let me just get this out: Bangkok Bangkok is the best Thai food in town. Yes, I'm serious. Only Siam Lotus Room is as good.
So that's only my opinion, but there you have it. I've only gotten into Thai food in the last four or so years, and I love it so much that I'm always up for it and am always willing to try a new Thai place. And so far, I keep coming back to Bangkok Bangkok.
We didn't really have what I would consider a full meal there tonight, but we ordered from there, so it'll have to do for a review. Ben is sick with a nasty cold, so I picked up a Tom Yum Goong for him - that'll take the cold outta anything, but he told me it was a bit weak. Normally, the lemon or lemongrass in that will zip right up the nose and clear everything up - try it next time you're congested. Even though it lacked in cold-curing powers, it still tasted great, so says this blogger's husband.
I had, as usual, the Pad Thai. Oh heaven, on a platter. I'm a picky eater, so I get mine without shrimp (allergies), peanuts (ick) or bean sprouts (double ick). Still, it's delicious. The sauce is the perfect consistency and so, so good.
Other dishes that rock there at the Tiger's Tear; Earth, Wind & Fire; and the Red Curry Chicken. I have yet to find a truly bad Thai place, but my experience (and I use the Pad Thai to measure all restaurants) has been that in other places, the food just isn't as flavorful (except at Siam Lotus).
Plus, I love the decor at BB. One part of the restaurant has traditional floor seating - which I insisted on having when I was like seven months pregnant, hell knows why, except that it makes me feel all exotic and unusual and it's so much fun. The doorways are trimmed with intricate woodwork, and statues, paintings, screens and other works of art adorn the place. Service is understated, and the staff is polite, if not exactly friendly. I love that they use these lovely silver pitchers and dishes to serve the water and rice.
Prices are comparable to other Thai places, except ones on the beach and Moon on U.S. 1, which for some unfathomable reason is really pricey for what it is. Dishes range in the $11 - $15 range, except, of course, pricier seafood dishes. Appetizers and soups are very cheap - the bill tonight for the soup, appetizer Pa Thai and a serving of white rice was $12.37. You can't beat that.
So, go. And enjoy.

I didn't know there was a Bangkok Bangkok in the Gables. I work near the one on Bird.
